How to get a Federal Job

By papalopp

You will find that it is relatively easy to apply for a federal job. It stands to reason that the more jobs you apply for, the more likely it is that you might get one.

The benefits are many. The health insurance before health care reform were excellent, time well tell if it will be as good as that of any other entity and included vision & dental options. The group life insurance was very affordable. Don’t forget the ten paid holidays a year. You will have two paid weeks off a year and after some time it could go to 3 weeks on certain jobs. Plus, you are garnering sick time for all pay periods you work. Many of the federal positions grant special consideration to veterans. A child care subsidiary program exists for federal employees at some sites. Even job seekers with disabilities are offered reasonable accommodations. Clearly decent retirement benefits and a 401k above and beyond social security, has got to sound good. The salaries and wages are very good to count on in this economic situation we are in now. It is difficult to get fired and if you really, really goof up, they might make you a supervisor.

So where do you start? Try going over to the Federal Office of Personnel Management, www.OPM.gov. From there you can get more specific information and read about other opportunities that federal employment can offer you. Now, from there, follow the link to www.USAJobs.com and create a logon and password. You’ll be able to build a resume and if yours is on the hard drive, cut and past a little. Save your work and that’s done. Now you can begin a job search. Use your city’s primary or downtown zip code and give yourself a realistic radius, how far you are willing to commute to work.

You can apply using your online resume, and will most likely be required to answer quite a few questions called KSA's to determine if you are an appropriate candidate. Do not lie. Answer all questions honestly. If a posed question asks you if you’ve ever written a book maybe you have never been published by a large house, but perhaps you put together an e-book and are self published over the net. Do you see the point? Just be prepared to give good answers in an interview if asked.

There exists another group of federal employees, whose sole job is to discredit you. When you were 19 years old and possibly involved in a DUI, you must indicate that when asked if you were ever arrested or found guilty of a crime. If you paid a fine or your case was dismissed, do not make the mistake a record of it does not exist. You also might need want to know if such a records exists with a municipality, county, state or was it a federal charge?. if the record originated in a county within the state of Texas three years ago, does it exist anywhere today? If so could it be expunged? If you don't know what that means you may best be served in seeking professional legal advice.

If you are a young person with a family then this might be your ticket. Just remember, don’t be a bureaucrat, but be a public servant. I would wish you good luck. Know that with good planning and common sense, you won’t need the luck.
